The Do's and Don'ts of Buying Engagement Rings

Getting engaged to be married soon is incredibly exciting not only for the would-be bride and groom but also for their families and friends. Amidst all the preparations for the D-day, one very small but important detail, which garners an incredible amount of attention and significance, is the engagement ring.

The tradition of engagement rings dates back to the ancient Egyptian times when it was not only a symbol of the commitment of relationship but also kept the bachelors away from trying their luck.

There are few do's and don'ts of buying this little piece of jewellery, which can speak a thousand words.

Do Pick a Style That Suits You

Before deciding on the metal, setting, finish etc., it’s important to pick a style that complements your finger. First, choose the aesthetic you love the most to see on your finger. Once you finalise it, you can proceed to work on the remaining details.

Do Try Alternatives

Though diamond is the most preferred gem in an engagement ring, there are alternatives that you can give a try. When choosing any other gemstone instead of a diamond, do make sure to ask about the durability factor. This is because gemstones being softer than diamonds are prone to scratching and chipping. The hardness of a gemstone is expressed on Mohs scale. So, educate yourself regarding it before going for any gemstone as the central piece for the engagement ring.

Don't Take Along Too Many People with You

Going to the jewellery store with a big group of people will only confuse you with making a decision. This is because everyone is likely to a different preference and opinion. The decision maker needs to be you and your spouse. So, it’s better if only the two of you take that decision.

Don’t Have the Notion That Bigger Always Means Better

If going for diamond rings, don’t just focus on the size of the stone. The quality also matters a lot, especially in case of diamonds. Though you will always be tempted to buy the biggest possible diamond for your fiancé, make sure to keep the other 3C’s: colour, cut and clarity also in mind to ensure that you get the best possible diamond in your budget, which will shine for ages without losing its sheen.

Don’t Forget to Measure the Finger Size

If you want to buy the engagement ring without taking your fiancé along, you should find out his/her finger size beforehand. The ring should be of the exact size as too loose or tight ring will create a problem in wearing. Also, if the ring is not of exact size, the side stones can get loose, fall and compromise the integrity of the ring.

Couples put in a lot of effort to find an engagement ring that is as beautiful and unique as the person who will be treasuring it for a lifetime. It’s a beautiful and romantic gesture for sure. Keep the above do’s and don’ts in mind before buying engagement rings.
